In fact, it's the brand name that everyone uses when they mean "internet telephone". It's very popular among international travellers and grey nomads, and it's installed on the BFS kiosk computers.

You'll need internet access and a headset with microphone (preferably, however speakers and in-built mic will also work). Confused? Here is an outline of the main Skype plans:
Free Calls:
Calls to other Skype users and 1800 numbers are free.No flag-fall applies.
"Pay As You Go": Buy $10 of "SkypeOut Credit" and you can make calls (and send SMSs). The current rates for calls can be found here. The current rate for SMS to Australia is 11.8 cents per message (as at 17 June 2015). Subscription Rates: You can buy a subscription. This gives you cheaper calling rates than Pay As You Go, but you have a regular monthly bill.
Which Should I Choose? From my own experience I suggest that you start with "Pay As You Go", then try one of the monthly plans once your Skype use increases. You can find Skype's current plans and pricing https://www.skype.com/en/rates/?nu=subs-calling . Skyping Ian
